The Swedish company Autoliv (NYSE:ALV, $24.35) developed the active hood system - a computer sensor inside the car bumper that scans for pedestrians about to be impacted and elevate the car hood in order to minimize the pedestrian's impact. The device will be mandatory in European cars by 2005.
